If I have it my way, we leave the night undisturbed to its darkness and its gems in the sky. Without artificial light, we see the moon's and the stars' brilliance at their peak. For me, it's humbling to look up at the vast night sky. I feel serenity. Breathing the fresh crisp air, feeling the slight gentle breeze pass by. My worries don't seem so big anymore. I feel a sense of clarity. The blanket of stars is truly a sight of wonder and beauty. Moments like these inspire me to restructure our urban surroundings. Not only for our well-being, but for our nocturnal wildlife. It's vital we leave nature untouched as much as possible. It's essentially nature and its cycles that keep us alive and healthy.
I propose we remove all outdoor artificial light. The neon signs, the lawn lights, the streetlights, etc. We use blackout curtains or blinds (natural and organic, native materials of the surrounding land) to keep the light from emitting outside when we use indoor lighting. Windows and homes can be made in a new way to incorporate this idea and become a staple. Travelling during the night is kept to a minimum unless there are emergencies such as a woman in labour or a life-threatening situation.
